Does Pregnancy Cause Headaches?
Headaches are a very common problem during pregnancy in particular throughout the first and second trimesters. It’s uncommon for these headaches to signal any kind of problem and some women even suffer from migraines during the course of their pregnancy.
Pregnancy begins a whole range of different changes within your body including an increase in hormone levels, increase in blood and circulation. Typically, headaches caused by pregnancy will begin to disappear around the second trimester and it’s more uncommon for them to occur at all in the third trimester. As the body adjusts to the new settings you may find your headaches get much better. During the third trimester headaches can still occur however, these are mainly related to your posture and the extra weight your body has to carry around.
It’s very important to reduce stress and tension throughout your pregnancy to not only help prevent pregnancy headaches but to also ensure you have a happy and healthy pregnancy and reduce the chance of a miscarriage. Stress, fatigue, hunger, dehydration and insomnia can cause tension headaches and more so should be addressed as soon as possible. It’s also important to ensure you cut down on your caffeine intake but don’t just suddenly stop taking coffee especially if you drank a lot before your pregnancy. Cut down on your coffee intake and gradually reduce the amount you drink to avoid caffeine withdrawal symptoms and headaches.
In some women headaches may even become migraines during the early stages of the pregnancy which is often around the time the woman experiences morning sickness. It is not unusual however, for women who are prone to migraines to actually improve during pregnancy or for others to notice no change at all. There is the small possibility that the headaches may be caused by a condition known as preeclampsia if they occur during the second and third trimesters. This is a condition which increases blood pressure during pregnancy and does requires medical attention as soon as possible.
How to cut Down on Headaches during Pregnancy.
Being pregnant means avoiding most medicines such as ibuprofen and other household painkillers. If the headaches are severe you can take small doses of plain paracetamol (acetaminophen) but it’s always much safer to try out all available natural methods beforehand.
- If the headache is tension related apply a cold compress to the back of your neck. Otherwise try a warm compress on the front and sides of your face.
- Reduce the stress you are suffering. Try not to put yourself into stressful situations and relax. Take a hot bath, unwind and try deep breathing exercises.
- Get plenty of sleep and rest throughout your pregnancy. A lack of sleep can cause headaches, stress and fatigue keeping you run down and unhealthy. Getting enough sleep is vital during your pregnancy.
- Eat healthy and construct a well balanced dietary plan. Eating small and frequent meals will help to stabilize your blood sugar and be healthier for you all round during your pregnancy.
