Is it Safe to Eat Fish Whilst Pregnant?

It is important to maintain a balanced diet during the stages of pregnancy and fish are a great natural source of protein, omega 3 fatty acids and more. It is important to include fish in your diet but it is also important not to eat too much and to eat only what is safe as otherwise it could harm the baby. This advice is true throughout all the months of pregnancy but it can be quite confusing to expecting mothers exactly what is safe to eat and what isn’t. This advice is also applicable to any nursing moms as what you eat can have an affect on the contents of your breast milk as well.
Firstly avoid eating any shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish because these types of fish contain high levels of mercury which can be unsafe for your baby. Mercury has been found to increase the chances of birth malformations and miscarriages in women exposed to high levels of this substance. It is therefore important that you limit your exposure to mercury as much as possible.
